Idioms are word combinations that kids and adults use
every day. Idioms have different meaning than the literal meanings of each word.
You have learned some language expressions in Portuguese (morning classes). Set
up a list of those expressions you already studied. Write them in a chart. Let’s
learn some language expressions (idioms) in English too.
See the example below. In
this homework activity you have to make a bilingual chart. Then you write the
idioms in Portuguese, plus a short definition, and then write an example in a sentence.
Most of the job has been done. You just need to do the same in English. If you find
it too difficult, write the examples the way you would normally say. Please do
your best to guess and do it.
Set up a list of 20
idioms or more in each column. Follow the example. Let’s check them in class!
Example:
Portuguese

English
|
Vai catar coquinho! (Não encha / Vá embora)
Chega de me
falar sobre isso, “vai catar coquinho” e me deixa em paz!
|
Go fly a kite! (go away)
Stop talking about this, “go fly a
kite” and leave me alone!
