Homework 04, LA, Due Feb. 29

Idioms are word combinations that kids and adults use every day. Idioms have different meaning than the literal meanings of each word. You have learned some language expressions in Portuguese (morning classes). Set up a list of those expressions you already studied. Write them in a chart. Let’s learn some language expressions (idioms) in English too.

See the example below. In this homework activity you have to make a bilingual chart. Then you write the idioms in Portuguese, plus a short definition, and then write an example in a sentence. Most of the job has been done. You just need to do the same in English. If you find it too difficult, write the examples the way you would normally say. Please do your best to guess and do it.

Set up a list of 20 idioms or more in each column. Follow the example. Let’s check them in class!

Example:

Portuguese
English

Vai catar coquinho! (Não encha / Vá embora)

Chega de me falar sobre isso, “vai catar coquinho” e me deixa em paz!

Go fly a kite! (go away)

Stop talking about this, “go fly a kite” and leave me alone!

Homework 03, Math, Due Feb. 22

First, check the weather prediction from Feb. 21 to 27 in three different cities: Barueri (São Paulo) and two other cities in other countries you like. Remember, weather can be: sunny, rainy, cloudy, windy (snowy?) etc.

Second, collect information about the weather for you to make the bar graphs. Suggestion: See http://www.climatempo.com.br/ or www.weather.com

Organize the weather data in bar graphs (remember what we did in class). Use A4 paper and a cm ruler, then make the bar graphs in pencil. Next, label the graphs. Use colored pencil to color the bars in the graph, please.

Last, write a paragraph about the graphs. Your job is to compare and contrast the data you collected. Hand in your work for teacher’s check.
